最上級の使い方と例文

最上級は
他の物に比べて程度が
最も～だ（でない）
という場合に使います。

通常、3つ以上の物について
話す場合に用います。

“比較“の記事をご覧ください。



最上級

最も～だ、という文では
形容詞(または副詞)を
最上級という形にします。



短い形容詞/副詞は…

・最後にestをつける
・yで終わる場合はyをiにかえてestをつける
・eで終わる場合はそのままstをつける
・子音＋母音＋子音の場合は
最後の文字を重ねてestをつける

用法①最も～だ

～は最も○○だ、という
最上級の基本の使い方です。


セットでよく使われる単語

in~~の中で
・in my family(家族の中で)　
・in the world(世界で)
of～～のうち
・of the three (3人のうち)
・of all (この中で)


  • It’s the best café in London.
    (ここはロンドン一のカフェだよ)

  • My house is the largest one in our neighborhood.
    （私の家は近所でも最も大きい）

  • Your dog ran the fastest of 3 dogs in the race.
    (あなたの犬がレースにいた3匹の中で最も早かった)


・所有格がある場合はtheをつけない

She is my best friend.
The dog is our most important family.





否定文

  • August isn’t the hottest season in Australia.
    (オーストラリアでは8月は一番暑い季節ではない)

  • I wasn’t the youngest woman of all.
    （私はこの中で最も若いというわけではない）

  • The supermarket isn’t the cheapest in this area.
    (このスーパーはここら辺で最も安いというわけではない)

否定文の意味に注意しよう。

◎最も～というわけではない
×最も悪い


疑問文

  • Where is the most popular theme park in Japan?
    (日本で一番人気のテーマパークはどこですか？)

  • What is the most interesting thing you learned recently?
    (最近学んだ中で一番面白いと思ったことは何？)

  • How can I become the richest person in the world?
    (どうすれば世界一のお金持ちになれますか？)

用法②最も悪い/少ない

最も悪い/少ない、という場合は
以下の単語を使います。

・the worst＝最も悪い
・the least＝最も少ない



  • It was the worst storm in years.
    (近年で最もひどい台風だった)

  • He is the least popular teacher in this school.
    （彼はこの学校で一番人気のない教師だ）

  • This salad set has the least salt of all menu.
    (このサラダセットは一番塩分の低いメニューだ)

用法③断然/はるかに

“ダントツで“のように
最上級を強調する場合は
以下の単語を使って表します。

much
very
far by
far and away



Her singing was by far better than everybody else.
(彼女の歌は断トツで他の誰よりもうまかった)

It’s the very latest type of car.
(今まさに最新の車ですよ。)



用法④最も～なうちのひとつだ

最高/最低レベルの何かが
複数ある場合はone of theを使い
「最も～なうちの一つ」
と表すことができます。


・one of the ＋最上級


  • Disneyland is one of the most popular dating spots
    (ディズニーランドは最も人気なデートスポットの一つです)

  • SNS is one of the most useful tools for collecting information.
    (SNSは情報収集において最も便利なツールの一つです)

  • This is one of the worst murder cases in history
    (これは史上最悪な殺人事件の一つだ)

この場合
名詞は複数形になるので
Sがつくことに注意。
赤字部分に注目してみてね。



用法⑤〇番目に～だ

具体的に何番目、という場合は
最上級に加えて
“序数詞”というものを使います。


序数詞は
・second/2番目
・third/3番目
・fourth/4番目
…などです。



the＋序数詞＋最上級



  • The watch is the third oldest watch in my shop.
    (この時計は私の店で3番目に古いものです)

  • November is the 11th month of the year.
    (11月は１年で11番目の月である)

  • What is the second highest mountain in Japan?
    (日本で2番目に高い山は何ですか？)



用法⑥今まで~した中で

最上級の後ろに続ける文は
in～やof～以外にも
いろいろなパターンがあります。

I’ve ever seenなどは
特によく使われます。

今まで～した中で
・I’ve ever＋過去分詞
・I ever＋過去形

私が知る中で
・I know

持っているものの中で
・I own

など。



  • It’s the most boring movie I’ve ever seen.
    (これは今まで見た映画の中で一番つまらない)

  • Who’s the most famous person you’ve ever met？
    (あなたがこれまで出会った人の中で一番有名な人は誰？)

  • He is the kindest person I know.
    (彼は私が知っている人の中で一番優しい人だ)

  • The cake was the worst I ever ate.
    (今まで食べたケーキの中でもこれは最悪だ)

  • I was the earliest person to arrive.
    (私が一番早く到着した)

  • What is the most valuable thing that you own?
    （あなたが持っている中で最も価値があるものは何？）
